03/The Ship
The Viking Voyages ship under square sail on the Bergen fjord
The ship under sail · Byfjorden

A clinker-built ship,
made for this coast.

Built clinker-style, with overlapping oak planks and a single square sail. The lines of the hull trace straight back to Viking-era shipwrights, who shaped vessels to ride the long fetch of the Norwegian coast. Modern hands have added an engine and full safety kit — everything else is as it has always been.

Viking ships are famously steady, and the fjord around Bergen is calm most of the season. Seasickness onboard is rare.

04/The 1.5-Hour Tour
Guests on board the Viking Voyages ship during a 1.5-hour fjord sailing

90 minutes on the fjord.
Depart from Bryggen.

A 1.5-hour sailing on a Viking-style ship, leaving daily from Bryggen — the UNESCO World Heritage wharf in the centre of Bergen. We row clear of the wharf, raise the square sail, and head out into Byfjorden.

There is sightseeing, a short guided story of the coast, and a stretch of quiet sailing. If the wind is light, you'll hear the hull working against the water. If the line is in, you'll feel a mackerel pull.

Children are welcome. Warm layers and a windbreaker are a good idea, even in July.
